In a letter to the community, Avon Mayor Bryan Jensen is among several Lorain County leaders asking residents to abide by the county’s mask requirement after being upgrade July 9 to a level 3 red alert by the state of Ohio.

Jensen wrote that as the nation is experiencing its worst viral pandemic in the past 100 years, “We help support front line workers in doing what we can to mitigate the virus.”

With novel coronavirus cases beginning to climb, he stressed he does not want to see another shutdown due to the inability to stop the spread.

“No community needs to experience this again,” Jensen said.

As of 2 p.m., July 10, Lorain County reported 976 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 64 deaths, according to statistics from Lorain County Public Health.

In supporting front line workers who have been working hard for months to keep the community safe, Jensen wrote the time is now to help keep them safe.

“It is now time for us, the Avon community, to step up and do something to help them,” he said. “We have often referred to these front line workers as ‘heroes.’

“We need to be heroes for them now. All it takes is wearing a mask when you are out in public. Not only will this help slow the spread of the virus, it tells everybody I’m supporting our front line workers and protecting my family and friends.”

Lorain County residents now are required to wear masks when out in public, as of 6 p.m., July 10, along with 11 other counties identified as being in level 3 of the state’s public health advisory system.

In a July 9 news release, the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office asked residents to not “overwhelm” law enforcement agencies with calls about masks.

Until the Sheriff’s Office receives clarification from the state, it will not be able to respond to all calls of this nature, the release said.
