Report: Browns, Garrett close to big extension

- Staff report

Ian Rapoport on NFL.com says Myles Garrett and the Browns are closing in on a 5-year, $125M extension.

In mid-June, ESPN reported the Browns and Myles Garrett were closing in a mega contract extension for the defensive end.

It’s been more than a month since that report, and now Ian Rapoport on NFL.com says the sides are again close to that big extension.

On July 14, Rapoport tweeted, “The #Browns and star pass-rusher Myles Garrett are closing in on a 5-year extension worth $125M, sources say. Another massive deal, this time for $25M in new money per year. Their top priority of this offseason and they are in the final stages.”

Later, Rapoport tweeted again with more info: “Details on the extension for the #Browns and Myles Garrett: In his rather large 5-year, $125M extension, there are $100M in total guarantees and $50M fully guaranteed at signing. He’s now under contract 2026.”

Garrett has two years remaining on his rookie contract, and he’s played up to status of being in the No. 1 pick in the 2017 draft. He has 30.5 sacks in his first three seasons with the Browns.

Joe Thomas’ seven-year, $84 million deal in 2011 is a record for a Browns player, but it appears Garrett’s will easily top that.

Garrett was getting to the opposing quarterback at a high rate in 2019 until he was suspended for the remainder of the season after he ripped the helmet off Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph and hit him in the head with it.

The moment cost Garrett the final six games of the 2019 season. Before that, he had 10 sacks in nine games. Garrett was reinstated for the 2020 season earlier this year.

“We do see Myles as a long-term member and pillar in our organization,” General Manager Andrew Berry told 105.7 the Fan Baltimore in May. “Great player, great person. Obviously, he did make a mistake last year that he’s learned from. But our confidence in and faith in Myles has not wavered, and we’re looking to seeing what he does this year and certainly for years to come.”
