Vernon N. Matthews, 64, of Lorain, departed this earthly life peacefully on Friday, July 17, 2020 due to complicati­ons from Covid-19.

He was born September 20, 1955, in Jacksonvil­le, Florida to the union of Hoyt and Gladys Matthews. Finding his niche at an early age, Vernon became a tailor and worked for Louis Cohn’s Menswear, Midway Mall and Diamond Menswear, Great Northern Mall until its closing. Vernon then continued his tailoring at home. In addition to sewing, Vernon loved to cook, decorate, and stewarded his creativity for events like banquets, weddings, and parties.Vernon never met a stranger and his lightheart­ed personalit­y garnered many special relationsh­ips, even with a couple of his physicians. Vernon was a founding member of Faith Ministries Christian Center (1991), under the leadership of Pastors Alvin and Diana Lindsey in Lorain and served faithfully in a variety of capacities.

He is survived by sisters, Deloris Keller, Chicago, IL; Loretta (Franklin) Bennett, Middleburg, FL; Linda Matthews Harvey, Jacksonvil­le, FL; brothers, Samuel Matthews and Ricardo (Theodosia Mills) Matthews all of Jacksonvil­le, FL; special friend since elementary school, Sabrina Span, Jacksonvil­le; Goddaughte­rs Teron Span of Jacksonvil­le and Aja’lon Huff of Elyria; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family and friends.

Family and friends are invited to a viewing on Thursday, July 23, 2020 at Faith Ministries Christian Center, 1306 Euclid Avenue, Lorain, from 1:00 PM – 7:00 PM. Due to Covid-19 restrictio­ns, there will be a private Celebratio­n of Life on Friday, July 24, 2020. Pastor D. Diana Lindsey will officiate. Masks are required at both services.
