Clearview Local Schools has devoted a scholarship fund in the name of a longtime secretary with the district who died in early July.
The Christine Thompson Memorial Scholarship Fund, made through the Community Foundation of Lorain County, was approved by the school district’s Board of Education during an Aug. 10 meeting.
The district plans to award one scholarship a year for students who demonstrate academic excellence and extracurricular activity involvement who will attend additional schooling.
Board member Mike Post said he’s glad the district created the fund in Thompson’s name, adding it already has received nearly $2,500.
“It’s outstanding, and it says a lot for her,” Post said of the monetary donations thus far. “She’s going to be sorely missed.”
The fund will not award scholarships until it reaches $10,000, he said.
Other areas of eligibility for the fund include financial need and demonstration of service to the community or district.
The selection committee that will chose the applicants will be appointed by the district, which cannot include a majority of founding donors or family members of applicants.
As far as other grant funding goes, Post said the district’s Educational Foundation will omit awarding grants this year.
He said because about half of the grants pertain to travel, which won’t be possible this school year due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the foundation instead
will plan to award funds to each school in the district.
