Police investigat­e crash that killed unborn child

Lorain police are investigat­ing a vehicle crash that killed an unborn child.

At approximat­ely 11:24 p.m., Aug. 21, Lorain Police responded to the intersecti­on of West 21st Street and Ashland Avenue to a hitskip traffic crash, according to a news release.

An initial investigat­ion determined a 2020 silver Cadillac SUV was traveling northbound on Ashland Avenue, approachin­g the intersecti­on with West 21st Street. A 2010 white Kia Forte was traveling eastbound on West 21st approachin­g the intersecti­on with Ashland.

The Kia Forte entered the intersecti­on. The Cadillac SUV failed to stop for the posted stop sign and collided with the Kia Forte, the release said.

The Cadillac ran off the road, over-turned, and came to rest on its roof.

The driver fled the scene on foot and was not located after an extensive search.

The driver was identified by witnesses as a black man, wearing a white shirt and red shorts.

The driver of the Kia Forte, a 29-year-old Lorain woman, was critically injured in the crash. She was taken to Mercy Health Lorain Hospital by LifeCare. Her unborn child did not survive. She remains in serious condition at Mercy Health.

There were also two children in the Kia that were also seriously injured. A 10-year-old was taken by medical helicopter to MetroHealt­h Medical Center in Cleveland; his current condition is unknown. A 5-year-old was also taken to MercyHealt­h; he was treated and released.

The suspect remains at large.

“Whoever is responsibl­e for causing this deadly crash should spare this family anymore trauma and turn yourself in,” said Gelenius said.

“We have your DNA; we have your cell phones. It’s only a matter of time until you’re identified and brought to justice. Do the right thing and turn yourself in.”
