City gets funding for road infrastructure
The Lorain County commissioners have approved a contract for the Sheffield Lake Community Road Watermain Project Replacement and Roadway Rehabilitation Project.
The contract with Buckeye Excavating and Construction, Inc. for $431,647.60 is funded through Lorain County’s Community Development Block Grant program. The county is funding $184,000 with the City of Sheffield Lake, providing $211,647.60 as a local match.
The contract includes $36,000 in contingency funds.
According to the commissioners, Sheffield Lake will replace approximately 1,870 feet of water main line originally installed in 1929 between Ferndale and Lake Road; rehabilitate approximately 1,000 feet of Community Road between Ivanhoe Avenue and Lake Road; and necessary signage, markings and other appurtenances.
“The CDBG program allows the county and local communities to cooperate and leverage funding in order to better serve the needs of our residents,” said Commissioner Lori Kokoski. “This program helps to improve quality of life for our residents and keep our communities competitive.”
Commissioners applied for $184,000 for this project in their 2019 CDBG Program Application that was approved by the state.
The project follows the successful expansion of Sheffield Lake’s Joyce E. Hanks Community Center in 2019, also financed through CDBG grant funding.
“The board is pleased to be able to expand our partnership to bring more resources into the county,” said Commissioner Matt Lundy. “Expanding our collective abilities is vital to maintain and improve services for our residents.”
Lorain County, applied for and was awarded over $570,000 dollars for the 2019 CDBG Program Application.
These funds have been approved for various public use projects including those impacting senior citizens, public streetscape improvements, public utility improvements, storm sewer/ street improvements and meals on wheels.
Funds are also used for Fair Housing activities, and administration of the program.
The 2019 CDBG funds are fully committed to projects, and the county plans on applying for funding in 2021.
