Coast Guard Station suspends seasonal operations in Lorain

- Staff report

Coast Guard Sector Buffalo is making preparations to suspend operations at Station (Small) Lorain and its other seasonal operating locations as the summer recreational boating season comes to a close, according to a news release.

The majority of search and rescue cases for which the Coast Guard has the responsibility to respond occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Station Lorain is seasonally staffed to create a second operating location within Coast Guard Station Cleveland Harbor’s area of responsibility.

It serves to reduce maritime assistance response time between Vermilion to Avon Point during the peak boating season, according to the release.

Station Cleveland Harbor will suspend seasonal operations out of Lorain Sept. 8 until next year.

Coast Guard Station Cleveland Harbor will continue to provide maritime assistance throughout the area, as well as coordinate with local area first responders to respond and provide assistance to boaters in distress, the release said.

The Coast Guard continues to strongly encourage all occupants of vessels to wear life jackets while on the water, even if they consider themselves strong swimmers.

Boaters should ensure that life jackets fit well.

Life jackets with bright colors and reflective tape are recommended. These items greatly assist search and rescue efforts during emergencies.

Although ambient air temperatures currently remain high throughout the region, water temperatures will begin to drop as fall approaches.

At colder temperatures, sudden exposure can cause cold water shock and prolonged exposure can cause hypothermia.

All boaters are asked to remain alert at all times and to keep an eye out for one another.

The Coast Guard frequently broadcasts requests for assistance from good Samaritans on VHFFM Channel 16.
