Matt Wilhelm award watch list

The Matt Wilhelm Award goes to The Morning Journal’s football player of the year. A watch list for the top players in the area will be published each week leading up to the presentati­on of the Award. This list is fluid, can change week to week and is in alphabetic­al order:

• RB Jaheim Atkinson, Sr., Elyria: Tallied 54 rushing yards in the Pioneers’ loss to Brunswick.

• QB Michael Corbo, Sr., Avon Lake: Completed 12of 15passes for 213yards and two touchdowns in a win over Midview. Corbo also ran six times for 51yards and a pair of TDs.

• WR Jaret Frantz, Sr., Elyria Catholic: Caught a pair of touchdown passes in a win over Bay. Frantz tallied 59 yards receiving on seven receptions in the contest.

• RB Joe Governale, Sr., Columbia: Governale was unavailabl­e for the Raiders’ Week 3win over Oberlin.

• RB Kenny Grobolsek, Jr., Brookside: Passed for 33 yards and tallied 13yards rushing in the Cardinals’ loss to Firelands.

• QB Anthony Guercio, Sr., North Olmsted: Guercio racked up 84yards on the ground and four rushing touchdowns in North Olmsted’s 28-0win over North Ridgeville in Week 2. He also passed for 83yards in the contest. The Eagles were back on the field after their Week 1game against Berea-Midpark was canceled after a team member tested positive for the novel coronaviru­s. North Olmsted looked sharp in its win despite not being able to begin practicing again until Sept. 1, just three days prior to its Sept. 4 tilt with North Ridgeville.

• RB Devon Hunter, Sr., Avon: Ran for 55 yards and one touchdown on eight carries in the Eagles’ win over North Ridgeville.

• RB Carter Janicek, Jr., Firelands: Ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries in the Falcons’ win over Brookside. Janicek’s second TD run was from 20 yards out.

• RB Gideon Lampron, Jr., Keystone: Racked up 144 yards and two touchdowns on 16carries in the Wildcats’ win over Black River. This was the first game of the season in which Lampron didn’t rush for over 200 yards. One of his TDs was a 48-yard run.

• QB Steven Navalinsky, Sr., Elyria Catholic: Completed 15 of 22 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns in the Panthers’ shutout win over Bay.

• QB Niko Pappas, Sr., Avon: Helped lead the Eagles to a 49-14 win over North Ridgeville in Week 3. Pappas completed 10 of 13 passes for 130yards and two touchdowns.

• WR Michael Ptacek, Sr., Avon: Caught a pair of passes for 53 yards and one touchdown in the Eagles’ win over North Ridgeville.

• QB Konner Rodick, So., Keystone: Led Keystone to a 34-3 win over Black River in Week 3. Rodick completed 10 of 15passes for 155yards and one touchdown in the victory.

• WR Ryne Shackelfor­d, So., Keystone: Caught three passes for 19yards and one touchdown against Black River. Shackelfor­d also carried the ball four times for 28yards.

• RB Torre Weatherspo­on, Jr., Amherst: Tallied 60 rushing yards on 13carries in the Comets’ win over BereaMidpa­rk.
