Wilhelm award watch list update on tap

Adam Schabel is back with an update on the quest for the Matt Wilhelm award, given annually to The Morning Journal high school football player of the year. Many players had byes, but a few logged action.

The Matt Wilhelm award goes to The Morning Journal’s football player of the year.

A watch list for the top players in the area will be published each week leading up to the presentati­on of the award. This list is fluid, can change week to week and is in alphabetic­al order:

• QB Michael Corbo, Sr., Avon Lake: The Shoremen were idle this past weekend after earning a first-round bye. For the season, he has thrown for 810yards and five touchdowns and run for 264yards and four scores.

• QB Robert Davis, Sr., Clearview: Passed for 191 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-12loss to Bryan. For the season, he has thrown for 1,243yards and nine touchdowns and run for 141 yards and one score.

• RB Gage Duesler, Sr., Avon Lake: The Shoremen were idle this past weekend after earning a first-round bye. For the season, he has run for 524yards and 11scores.

• RB Joe Governale, Sr., Columbia: Carried 15times for 127 yards and three touchdowns in the Raiders’ 47-7win over Black River. For the season, he has run for 723yards and 10scores.

• RB Devon Hunter, Sr., Avon: The Eagles were idle this past weekend after earning a first-round bye. For the season, he has run for 472yards, caught seven passes for 82yards and scored 10touchdow­ns.

• RB Gideon Lampron, Jr., Keystone: The Wildcats were idle this past weekend after earning a first-round bye. For the season, he has run for 1,180 yards and scored 15touchdow­ns.

• QB Steven Navalinsky, Sr., Elyria Catholic: The Panthers were idle this past weekend after earning a first-round bye. For the season, he has thrown for 863yards and 10touchdow­ns.

• QB Niko Pappas, Sr., Avon: The Eagles were idle this past weekend after earning a first-round bye. For the season, he has thrown for 1,037yards and 15touchdow­ns and run for 294yards and three scores.

• RB Andrew Parkowski, Sr., Olmsted Falls: The Bulldogs were idle this past weekend after earning a first-round bye. For the season, he has run for 532 yards and nine touchdowns.

• QB Konner Rodick, So., Keystone: The Wildcats were idle this past weekend after earning a first-round bye. For the season, he has thrown for 1,130yards and accounted for 14touchdow­ns.

• WR Ryne Shackelfor­d, So., Keystone: The Wildcats were idle this past weekend after earning a first-round bye. For the season, he has caught 24 passes for 521yards and has scored nine touchdowns.
