Council allocates $2.3M COVID-19 relief money round 2
Safety forces, businesses and nonprofit organizations around Lorain will receive money through the city’s latest round of federal funding to temper the financial effects of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Lorain will spend $2.3 million through the second round of money coming from the federal CARES Act. That is the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security Act, or CARES Act.
The city made two previous allocations for the expenses that the city government, local companies and charitable groups had due to COVID-19.
“This is the third and final round,” said Mayor Jack Bradley, speaking before the council meeting.
“We just tried to make up for any losses that were occasioned by the pandemic,” he said. “A lot of the churches had to do PPE, sanitation and precaution for social distancing, so we tried to give them money for that,” the mayor said, referring to personal protective equipment such as face coverings and gloves.
Council had relatively little discussion on the issue. Councilman-at-Large Mitch Fallis said it is good for the city to support organizations doing great work in Lorain on a shoestring budget.
Lorain police and firefighters will be the biggest beneficiaries, with the city allocating more than $1.39 million for salaries and another $521,325 for hazard pay.
