Main Street Vermilion’s Public Art Vermilion committee is continuing the effort for visitors to engage in its recent postcard project by starting up a selfie contest and publishing a guide booklet.

The project, featuring 15 murals of vintage postcards, now will have a 16-page booklet available for a suggested $5 donation for visitors to purchase.

The booklet features a map with all the locations of the postcards around Vermilion, with a walkable tour of 10 of those postcards in downtown Vermilion, which passes by other businesses and restaurants where visitors can stop by.

Marilou Suszko, executive director of Main Street Vermilion, said the group has worked on the booklet since the launch of the project earlier in the year.

“We always knew we needed a guide book to get people around town,” Suszko said.

“It’s also a beautiful keepsake.”

Also included in the booklet, are photographs of the original postcards that the murals were based off of for the project.

“You can do a then-and-now comparison,” Suszko said.

Main Street Vermilion also will have reproductions of all 15 postcards featured in the project available for purchase within the week at its location at 685 Main St. in Vermilion, where visitors can purchase the booklet.

The organization also announced a selfie contest, inviting visitors to vote for their favorite postcard.

Those interested in participating can take a photo of themselves in front of their favorite postcard, post it to Facebook or Instagram and tag the post with #PublicArtVermilion.

The contest runs from Oct. 29 to Nov. 29.

A name will be drawn each Friday during the duration of the contest to win a pack of all 15 postcards, valued at $25.

Suszko said these addons to the postcard project help aid in its purpose, which is to get people acquainted with present-day Vermilion and how it has changed.

“Public art is supposed to be unique, original and singular to a community,” she said.
