For nearly half a year, Jessica Santiago has provided meals under a canopy outside her house, 1722 Washington Ave. in Lorain.

Recently, Panera Bread has started donating fresh deliveries of bread and pastries to Santiago to give free of charge.

“I’ve been so blessed to be able to give people what they need,” Santiago said.

With donations from Panera Bread, a local church, and community members, Santiago is able to provide for those in need within her own community.

“There’s no shame in asking for help. I don’t have much money myself but I’m able to make a difference. There’s always a way,” Santiago said.

Since the number of people Santiago has been serving has risen, she’s been working with a volunteer, Todd Kuhar.

With Kuhar, Santiago has been able to open a “select your own” food and clothing pantry at her home. Recently, Santiago received 5,000 pieces of clothing and gave them away for free to local families and children.

“Together we were able to keep people warm. Sometimes I don’t think people realize what they can do. But it’s a lot,” she said.

Every other Sunday, Santiago and Kuhar put out fruits, vegetables, canned foods, bread and clothing to let people take what they need. The next Sunday she’s

While the pandemic continues, Santiago has adapted to the rules and regulations needed to keep everyone safe.

“I called the health department and they said what I’m doing is okay. Everything just has to be sealed,” she said.

During distributions, Santiago and Kuhar wear masks and gloves. Breakfast is available on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon and bread is available everyday until it runs out.
