Wilhelm award watch list update unveiled

As the playoff road continues, Adam Schabel is back with this week’s update of candidates for the Matt Wilhelm award, given annually to The Morning Journal high school football player of the year.

The Matt Wilhelm award goes to The Morning Journal’s football player of the year.

A watch list for the top players in the area will be published each week leading up to the presentati­on of the award.

This list is fluid, can change week to week and is in alphabetic­al order:

• QB Michael Corbo, Sr., Avon Lake: Completed 13 of 20passes for 177yards and two touchdowns, and also carried one time for four yards, in the Shoremen’s 54-7win over North Royalton. For the season, he has thrown for 1,090yards and seven touchdowns and run for 331yards and five scores.

• RB Gage Duesler, Sr., Avon Lake: Carried seven times for 95yards and two touchdowns in the Shoremen’s 54-7win over North Royalton. For the season, he has run for 787yards and 14 scores.

• RB Joe Governale, Sr., Columbia: Carried 22times for 85yards and two touchdowns in the Raiders’ 14-7 win over Genoa Area. For the season, he has run for 852 yards and 12scores.

• RB Devon Hunter, Sr., Avon: Carried 12times for 114yards and three touchdowns in the Eagles’ 35-14 win over Highland. For the season, he has run for 665 yards, caught nine passes for 103yards and scored 13 touchdowns.

• RB Gideon Lampron, Jr., Keystone: Carried 26 times for 117yards and one touchdown in the Wildcats’ 38-27loss to Van Wert. For the season, he has run for 1,608yards and scored 21 touchdowns.

• QB Niko Pappas, Sr., Avon: Completed 7of 12 passes for 123yards, and also carried five times for 98yards and one score, in the Eagles’ 35-14win over Highland. For the season, he has thrown for 1,294yards and 17touchdow­ns and run for 447yards and five scores.

• QB Konner Rodick, So., Keystone: Completed 15 of 31passes for 208yards and two touchdowns in the Wildcats’ 38-27loss to Van Wert. For the season, he has thrown for 1,455yards and accounted for 17touchdow­ns.

• WR Ryne Shackelfor­d, So., Keystone: Caught eight passes for 135yards and two touchdowns, and also carried three times for 34yards and one score, in the Wildcats’ 38-27loss to Van Wert. For the season, he has caught 34passes for 728yards and has scored 12touchdow­ns.
