The Hispanic Fund, the first affiliate fund established at the Community Foundation of Lorain County, is committed to improving and promoting socioeconomic and educational opportunities within the Hispanic community throughout Lorain County and Oakwood Park in the city of Lorain will benefit from a donation.

At the Hispanic Funds’ August meeting, members chose to support two community initiatives, according to a news release from the Community Foundation.

The first was to support community coalitions engaged in outreach that promotes the 2020 Census and voting, the release said.

The second is to support community health and wellness, including committing $4,000 of the $20,000 projected budget to facilitate the opening of a community asset in Lorain, the Oakwood Park swimming pool, according to the release.

Albert Calo, president of the Hispanic Fund, fondly remembers his first paying job as a teenager was a lifeguard at Oakwood Park swimming pool the summer of 1985.

Calo said he spent many summers there as the pool was a genuine diversion and enjoyment for most neighborhood children.

“I am very fortunate to be president of the Hispanic Fund at the time that this donation is needed to support such an important initiative organized by leaders of the community,” he said. “During these challenging times, we look forward to continuing our work Connecting People Who Care with Causes that Matter.”
