Churches to provide 500 Thanksgiving Day meals
Three Lorain congregations are using their time to provide meals for those in need on Thanksgiving Day.
Apostle Charles Howard and his wife, Pastor Valerie Howard, of God’s Kngdom Worship Center said people can get the free dinners from noon to 2 p.m., Nov. 26, at 423 Washington Ave.
The meals are going to consist of traditional Thanksgiving favorites such as turkey, ham, chicken, green beans, dressing, mashed potatoes and desserts.
“We want people to know they don’t have to spend Thanksgiving alone and hungry,” Howard said.
In conjunction with his congregation, members from Body of Christ Church and Greater Victory Church will do the cooking and helping aid in the meal distribution.
About 30 volunteers will spend a portion of their Thanksgiving holiday by serving their own community, Howard said.
With a $3,000 donation from Keith Marsh, founder of Specialized Trust Co., at least 500 meals will be cooked, prepackaged and dispersed.
“We want to make sure the needs of the community are met during this time,” Howard said.
Members of God’s Kngdom Worship Center are no strangers to volunteering, he said.
In fact, serving meals to the community is one of its core activities, Howard said.
On Saturdays, the church passes out prepackaged lunch bags to help anyone who may need a meal, he said.
Social distancing measures are taken and wearing a mask or face covering are required.
“We won’t stop helping people,” Howard said. “We’ll just do it with masks and six feet apart.”
As the holiday season progresses, Howard said he and his wife, along with their congregation, intend to support and aid as many people as possible.
“I’m just so thankful for the help from Mr. Marsh and the other churches,” he said. “Because of them, we are able to do a good thing for a lot of people.
“It would have been hard to do this without them. I’m so thankful for their help.”
