Take a story stroll through Oberlin

- Staff report

OberlinKids and Lorain County Creating Healthy Communities have collaborated to create a story stroll family engagement activity in Oberlin.

People can take a journey through downtown Oberlin while stopping at participating businesses’ windows to read a new children’s book along the way, according to a news release from OberlinKids.

Each participating business has two pages of a storybook.

It is one mile from the beginning, America’s Origami Shop/OberlinKids, 23 Eric Nord Way, to the end.

OberlinKids.org/storystroll also offers an interactive map and additional activities related to the current story offered.

The story will continue to be changed out seasonally, as well as participating businesses, the release said.

The story stroll is designed to combine storytime, movement and creative activities to promote physical fitness and literacy, according to the release.

“OberlinKids is excited for this collaboration to share our love for stories and get people out into the community safely,” said Jenn Keathley, director of OberlinKids. “We are hoping that families get out, get some fresh air, engage in the story and support our local businesses along the way.

“It is no surprise to us that Oberlin stepped up to the task, in fact, we had too many volunteers for this project. So many downtown businesses wanted story pages that we will switch them around each season to include more storefronts.

“Once again, we brought together our goals to increase family engagement, literacy programming for children and caregivers as well as to provide more free or low-cost recreational opportunities to encourage physical activity.”

OberlinKids is a United Way of Greater Lorain County community collaborative made up of partners, advocates and community supporters who have come together to ensure that all children in the

Oberlin City School District enter kindergarten healthy and ready to learn.
