Oberlin police seek shooter who caused lockdown
Shooting on Jan. 31 caused Oberlin school buildings to be on lockdown Feb. 1 pending an investigation
The Oberlin Police Department is searching for two men involved in a Jan. 31 shooting that left another man injured.
At 4:08 p.m., officers received a 911 call of an unconscious man on the ground in the 200 block of South Park Street, who was possibly the victim of a gunshot wound, according to an Oberlin police report.
An officer arrived and found a group of people in the driveway and a Black man lying down with a large amount of blood in the snow around his body.
A witness told police a Black man had fled the scene east into a wooded area.
The victim was moving slightly, but would not respond to any questions.
The officer found what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the victim’s left leg and applied a tourniquet, the report said.
By the time an ambulance arrived, the victim no longer was conscious and chest compressions were done because a pulse could not be located.
The victim was transported by ambulance to Mercy Health - Allen Hospital.
Due to the weather conditions, a medical helicopter could not respond, so the victim was later transported to MetroHealth in Cleveland.
A witness told officers the shooting took place at her residence and that the suspects were two Black men who came to “smoke” with the victim, according to the report.
The woman said everything was fine until the two men told the victim to get on the ground before the gun went off, the report said.
She stated she did not know the men and did not know where they were from.
The woman could not provide a clothing description of the suspects.
As an officer approached the woman’s house, a handgun was located in the driveway.
Oberlin police Lt. Mike McCloskey said the victim is recovering at MetroHealth, but hit didn’t not know his condition.
McCloskey said the victim’s information is not being released at this time and investigators are trying to figure out the relationship between all parties involved.
Anyone with information can call the Oberlin Police Department at 440774-1061.
Oberlin City Schools buildings were on lockdown Feb. 1 resulting from the shooting.
As a safety precaution, all exterior doors were locked.
Parents were given a virtual learning option for the day.
