LCGBCA all-star game canceled
We will continue to devote our time and energy into making each student-athlete’s experience one that they will cherish for a lifetime.” — Lorain County Girls Basketball Coaches Association
For the second year in a row, there will be no Lorain County Girls Basketball Coaches Association all-star game, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In a release, the LCGBCA explained that due to “the current environment,” the game will not be played. The association announced it will still award scholarships to the 16 Lorain County seniors who were selected to the all-star game.
“The All-Star night has a long history of great memories, which is why the decision to not have a game this year was a difficult one,” the LCGBCA said in a release. “The Board of the LCGBCA made the decision taking into consideration the current environment. This decision was made for the safety and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches, and their families. Our Association also felt it was important to minimize the risk of exposure and shutdowns for our many spring sport athletes and coaches.
“Our LCGBCA looks forward to continuing this great tradition in the future and are saddened that we cannot celebrate our studentathletes together for the second year in row, but we will continue to make our student-athletes our top priority. We will continue to devote our time and energy into making each student-athlete’s experience one that they will cherish for a lifetime.”
The following seniors will receive the scholarship from the LCGBCA: Catie Geiger, Avon, Alyssa Peganoff, Avon, Grace Santee, Avon, Hailey Hodge, Avon Lake, Emma Knick, Avon Lake, Corey Kroneker, Avon Lake, Keegan Kwiatt, Avon Lake, Kathleen McGinty, Avon Lake, Sarah Torres, Brookside, Emily Rapacz, Elyria Catholic, Taylor Mehl, Elyria, Madison Sutton, Firelands, Megan Sutton, Firelands, Grace Sherban, Firelands, Jillian Laposky, Wellington, and Allyson Zvara, Wellington.
The 16 seniors will receive a scholarship and a plaque recognizing their achievements.
The association plans for its all-star game to return in 2022, along with its Lorain County preview, which was held in a modified fashion in 2021. Alongside the senior allstar game, which is normally the final event of the evening at the LCGBCA all-star night, the association also hosts a senior game and a rising stars game.
Both are expected to return in 2022.
“The LCGBCA, in conjunction with the (Lorain County Boys Basketball Coaches Association), hosts an annual Lorain County Preview, an annual coaches clinic, and our All-Star evening,” the LCGBCA said in a release. “In addition to these events, we also select AllCounty awards annually to recognize outstanding season performances by our student-athletes. In addition, we annually induct an individual who has positively impacted Lorain County Girls Basketball through coaching, officiating, or announcing into our Hall Of Fame. All proceeds from these events are given back to our Lorain County Senior Girl Basketball players who apply for our scholarship.”
Several of the players selected to the LCGBCA’s senior all-star team will be participating in the West Side All-Star game, scheduled to be played at HoopTech in North Ridgeville on March 28.
