TOP OF THE CROP

-

Baseball 1: Amherst (5-1)

2: Avon Lake (4-1) 3: Columbia (5-0) 4: Firelands (6-2) 5: Wellington (5-1) 6: Elyria Catholic (3-2) 7: Olmsted Falls (3-3) 8: North Ridgeville (5-3) 9: Keystone (4-4) 10: Avon (2-3)

Watch List: Bay (5-3), Vermilion (5-3), Lorain (3-2) Crop Comments: Two years in between seasons has done a lot to the area’s baseball teams. Mostly it’s made creating this Top of the Crop even more difficult as outside of the top five every team has played each other and has a loss that conflicts with a win. … But never mind that, starting at the top to the crop Amherst and Avon Lake look to be the leaders in the Southwestern Conference. The Comets have some impressive wins, including one over St. Ignatius that is good enough to earn them the top spot. …. The Lorain County League has three representatives in the top five, with Columbia currently leading the pack without a loss. … Now to the teams ranked six through ten, where things get interesting. Elyria Catholic, coming in at six, has wins over North Ridgeville and watch list member Bay. But they also have a loss to the Rockets on their resume. … North Ridgeville has a win over Keystone and a loss to Olmsted Falls. … Keystone has that loss to North Ridgeville and a win over Avon, who in turn have a win over Bay. It’s all confusing and the coming weeks will surely clear things up, but until then let’s just enjoy the fact that we have actual baseball being played.
