Lorain City Schools teachers are lining up in hopes of scoring educational supplies totaling up to $30,000 from Tyson Foods.

The supplies could come to Lorain Schools through donations from the company.

On April 12, school board members Mark Ballard, Bill Sturgill, Yvonne Johnson, Courtney Nazario and Tim Williams learned of donations in advance of potential awards. The acceptance was recommended by Treasurer Tia Kearney and approved by CEO/Superintendent Jeff Graham.

The food company in 2018 first announced a collaboration with the online giving portal DonorsChoose.org to donate money in communities where Tyson has food processing plants.

“We have a responsibility to support our communities in a variety of ways, including equipping our teachers with the resources they need as an effective way to support education,” said Debra Vernon, senior director, corporate social responsibility, Tyson Foods. “Through the DonorsChoose.org model teachers can focus on the individual needs of their classrooms and students can experience new or better ways to learn.”

Teachers could ask for up to $1,000 toward needed supplies through DonorsChoose.org, a website started in 2000 to match donors with public school projects happening at the classroom level.
