City auctions old equipment after transfer to new building
The City of Lorain welcomed prospective buyers on May 1 as they auctioned old and obsolete equipment.
Starting at the old street department garage at 114 E. 35th St., everything from old Lorain street lights, signs, mechanical equipment and tools were up for grabs to the highest bidder with old equipment from the city’s street repair and park maintenance departments.
With a healthy turnout of bidders, one by one auctioneers Barck Auction & Realty sold off items no longer needed by the city after a move in 2020 to a Central Service Complex at 2132 West Park Drive.
After auctioning off items at the street garage, the sale moved to 1752 Hamilton Ave. at the city electrical department where bidding continued.
According to a list of items available by Barck, the crown jewel available was a 1997 Ford Louisville truck, set up to carry asphalt, which was used for years by the city to repair pot holes.
Additional items of note included a 2006 Sterling five-ton dump truck with 46,000 miles, and a 1986 Case 480E backhoe with frontend loader.
The auction was the first live in-person for Barck in the past 18 months due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, and with a plethora of items to choose from, prospective buyers had to come and see for themselves.
The possibilities were endless in finding a unique piece of Lorain nostalgia or a rare piece of equipment that could still be of use for the right buyer.

The items up for auction were those that were not moved to the new facility on West Park Drive including many obsolete parts for vehicles the city no longer uses, officials said.
