Voters decide local levy issues

Notable decisions include Sheffield Township voters rejecting a 3.0-mill renewal levy for the Sheffield Township Fire Department and a 10-year 2.86-mill renewal levy for Clearview Local School District.

Lorain County voters decided several ballot issues in the May 4 primary election and what local services will look like moving forward.

A total of 20 ballot levy issues were voted on that cover services impacting fire department­s, libraries, school districts, EMS services and road infrastruc­ture.

Notable decisions include Sheffield Township voters rejecting a 3.0-mill renewal levy for the Sheffield Township Fire Department and a 10-year 2.86mill renewal levy for Clearview Local School District.

Here is the full roundup of Lorain County levies on the ballot and unofficial results from the Lorain County Board of Elections.

Amherst Township

Voters approved a 1.0mill renewal levy for roads and bridges, 131-38, at a cost of $28.48 per $100,000 in valuation.

The levy generates an estimated $123,413 annually.

Avon Lake

Avon Lake voters said yes to two renewal levies on the ballot in support of the Avon Lake Public Library and ambulance/EMS services.

The three-year 2.0-mill ambulance levy was approved 1,389 to 204.

The levy will generate $1,771,742 annually at a cost of $51.44 per $100,000 valuation.

Voters will continue their support of the Avon Lake Public Library approving the five-year 2.8mill renewal levy 1,337 to 255.

The levy will generate $2,422,529 annually at a cost of $72.02 per $100,000 valuation.

Brighton Township

Voters in Brighton Township approved the renewal of a five-year 1.0-mill road improvemen­t levy 36-13.

The levy will generate an estimated $21,650 per year at a cost of $24.46 per $100,000 in valuation.

Central Lorain County Ambulance District

A three-year 1.15-mill renewal levy for current expenses was approved by voters 919-139.

The levy will generate $434,154 annually at a cost of $29.90 per $100,000 in valuation.

The ambulance district serves the communitie­s of Oberlin, Camden Township, Kipton, New Russia Township, Henrietta Township and Pittsfield Township.

Camden Township

Voters approved two renewal levies on the ballot: A 2.0-mill fire and EMS levy passed 112-28 along with a 1.5-mill road improvemen­t levy passed, 113-27.

Columbia Township

Columbia Township voters rejected a 1.3 mill road improvemen­t renewal levy 161-128.

Clearview Local School District

Sheffield Township voters rejected a 10-year 2.86mill emergency levy 123 to 99.

The levy would have cost taxpayers $87.59 per $100,000 in valuation to generate an estimated $261,855 annually.

Lorain

Voters gave resounding approval to two renewal levies are on the ballot in the city of Lorain impacting the Lorain Fire Department and the Lorain Public Library System’s Main Library Branch.

The 5.95-mill library levy was approved 1,438 to 362, according to unofficial results.

The levy will generate $3,354,416 annually for five years at a cost of $178.88 per $100,000 valuation.

The 1.70-mill fire levy passed 1,736 to 475 and will generate an estimated $1,407,661 at a cost of $55.73 per year per $100,000 in valuation.

Oberlin

Voters approved three renewal levies including a current expense levy, a garbage levy and a levy for the Oberlin Public Library.

A five-year 1.20-mill current expense levy was approved 658-85 and will generate $147,208 annually at a cost of $32.70 per $100,000 valuation.

A 3.0-mill garbage levy passed 664-82 and will generate $368,017 annually costing taxpayers $81.75 per $100,000 valuation.

The 3.25-mill current expense levy for the Oberlin Public Library passed 734-106 and will bring in $726,646 annually at a cost of $87.72 per year for the owner of a $100,000 home.

Sheffield Lake

Sheffield Lake voters approved a five-year 2.95-mill levy, 327-75, in support of the Domonkas Branch of the Lorain Public Library System.

The levy will generate $439,962 annually at a cost of $85.11 per year per $100,000 valuation.

Sheffield Township

Voters in Sheffield Township rejected a 3.0-mill additional levy, 75-62, against the Sheffield Township Fire Department.

The additional levy would have generated an extra $174,988 at a cost of $105 per $100,000 in valuation to expand services.

A five-year 2.25-mill current expense levy for the Fire Department and EMS was approved 88-51 that will allow it to continue providing already existing services.

According to the Lorain County Auditor’s Office, the levy is expected to generate $116,303 annually at a cost of $59.98 per year per $100,000 valuation.

Voters also approved a 2.5-mill renewal levy for EMS services, 91-46, that will generate an estimated $130,880 annually at a cost of $68.04 annually per $100,000 valuation.

The levy provides funding to pay the individual­s who staff the station.

Sheffield Township voters renewed a 0.35-mill current expense levy, 9048, that generates an estimated $12,874 annually at a cost of $6.22 per $100,000 in valuation

South Lorain County Ambulance District

A five-year 3.25-mill current expense renewal levy was approved by voters 298-62.

The levy will generate $901,702 annually at a cost of $86.32 per year.

The Ambulance District provides emergency services to the communitie­s of Wellington, Wellington Township, Rochester, Rochester Township, Brighton Township, Penfield Township and Huntington Township.

According to the Lorain County Board of Elections, Lorain County has a total of 134,404 registered voters.

All results are unofficial until certified by the Board of Elections.
