Christmas tree lots feeling inventory crunch

- By Michael Fitzpatrick mfitzpatrick@morningjournal.com

Sales of Christmas trees locally have been steady, although there is an issue with supply, and some trees can be pricey.

If you would like to cut down your own tree, head to is Treaster’s Tree Farm, 13184 Gore Orphanage Road in Wakeman.

This weekend, the farm will be open to the public from 10 a.m. until dark, Dec. 4 and 5.

The price of a tree is $8 per foot, plus tax, said Barbara Treaster, owner.

Cash and check with proper identification are the only form of payment accepted.

This is the only weekend the farm will be open to those who want to chop down their own trees, Teaster said.

Customers can expect to find Colorado Blue Spruce, Norway Pine, White Pine and Fraser fir.

A temporary Christmas tree lot sprung up in Lorain on state Route 58, also Leavitt Road, across the street from Lighthouse

Commons.

Run by Bushur and Sons, the lot has hundreds of trees with an inventory that included towering Fraser Firs, and nicely sized Blue Spruces, Scotch Pines, White Pines.

Workers there said business likely will pick up greatly on the weekends.

Gale’s Garden Center, 24373 Center Ridge Road in Westlake, had a nice supply of trees on hand, but a worker said that most of the taller Fraser firs have been bought up.

Gale’s officials said there is a good selection of trees there. The store has 750 trees for the season, which is down by approximately 200 trees from a year ago, they said.

The Treaster farm had supply problems of its own, but this one was due to “critters.”

Barbara Treaster said that deer rubbing up against trees kills the plants and cost the farm probably 50 trees from its supply.
