GOLFER OF THE YEAR

Jake Morgan Keystone, senior

For the second year in a row, a Morgan brother is The Morning Journal Golfer of the Year. This year, it’s Jake Morgan. Morgan was the 2021Lorain County League Player of the Year and helped lead Keystone to the state tournament. Morgan was an academic All-Ohioan and had a 77.4 18-hole average. He also had seven top-ten finishes in tournament play. Jake is the second straight Keystone player to win this award, joining his brother, Ian, who won the award in 2020.

Morgan’s squad won the Lorain County League for the third straight year and also produced the league’s Golfer of the Year for the second season. Both of those winners were Morgan’s sons, Ian and Jake. The Wildcats made their first-ever state tournament appearance this season after finishing third at the Windmill Lakes District.

FIRST TEAM

Chris Brown, Jr., Westlake

A district qualifier who helped Westlake win the Great Lakes Conference in their first year in the league. Shot a 72at the sectional tournament pacing the Demons second-place finish.

Danny Donegan, Sr., Avon Lake

A first-team all-SWC honoree. Carded a 73 at the Midview Invitation­al to help the Shoremen walk away with the team title.

Jack Gerborg, Sr., Avon

A first-team all-SWC honoree, lost a playoff to qualify for the state tournament after shooting a 74at the district tournament. Was second at the SWC preview with a 71 and third at the Midview Invitation­al with a 74.

Zach Hritz, Sr., Columbia

First-team all-LC8 with a 38.7 nine-hole average in the conference. That average was good enough to rank third in the conference. Had an 84.1 18-hole average in tournament­s.

Nolan King, Sr., Avon

A Division I state qualifier as an individual with a 73at the district meet. Was a firstteam all-SWC selection and a medalist at the SWC preview with a 68 (three-underpar). Shot a five-under 29 at Pine Brook against North Ridgeville.

Gus Matheson, Sr., Vermilion

Sandusky Bay Conference, Lake Division Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection. Had a nine-hole average of 40.1 and an 18-hole average of 80.0. Was a two-sport athlete in the fall, also playing for the Sailors soccer team where he was captain.

Ian Morgan, Sr., Keystone

A first-team all-LC8selecti­on had a 76.1 average over 18-holes and helped Keystone qualify for the state tournament. Had eight top-10 tournament finishes and was the LC8’s second-leading golfer with a 38.4 average over eight rounds.

Ben Scheef, Jr., Olmsted Falls

Second-team All-SWC. Won a pair of tournament­s including the 2021 Comet Invitation­al and the Pioneer Invitation­al. Was an individual qualifier for the district tournament. Had a 38.2 nine-hole average and a 76.89 18-hole average.

Bryan Stone, Jr., Midview

A first-team All-SWC honoree. Had a season-low 18-hole score of 73 at the Amherst Invitation­al. Shot an 80 at the SWC Championsh­ips, securing his first-team all-conference spot

Ryan Yoder, So., Amherst

Southweste­rn Conference Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection. Won two tournament­s and finished in the top-three in 10 of the 11 tournament­s he played in. Had a school-record threeunder 31 through nine holes and an 18 hole low of 72at Columbia Hills.

SECOND TEAM

(In alphabetic­al order) Austin Bray, Sr., Amherst:

Had four top-10finishes in eight tournament­s. Shot his best 18-hole score at the Pine Hills District (76).

Luke Dietrich, So., Rocky River: Firstteam all-GLC. District qualifier for the second year in a row, shot an 82 at the Pine Hills tournament in 2021. Was the Pirates leading scorer with an 80.5 18-hole average.

Brenton Dill, Jr., Avon: First-team allSWC with a third-place finish at the conference preview after carding a 74. Shot an 84at the district tournament at Pine Hills, helping Avon finish a stroke from qualifying for the state tournament as a team. Will Fankhauser, Sr., Westlake: Helped lead Westlake to a GLC title. Qualified for the district tournament shooting a 77, three strokes off from the final state qualifier.

Ben Lampe, Sr., North Ridgeville: All-SWC second-team selection. Had a 36.6 nine-hole average and an 82 18-hole average.

Hunter McCourt, So., Avon: A secondteam all-SWC honoree. Finished seventh at the SWC preview and second at the St. Edward’s Invitation­al with a 74 and a 73 respective­ly.

Jack Senghas, So., Keystone: First-team all-LC8. Helped Keystone qualify for the state tournament. Had a nine-hole average of 44.5.

Dylan Sowers, So., Olmsted Falls:

Second-team All-SWC. Finished second at the Pioneer Invitation­al with a 74 and finished in the top-three of the SWC Championsh­ips at Pine Hills with a 77. Finished in the top ten at six different tournament­s. Had a 39.8nine-hole average and an 80 18-hole average.

Nick Tianello, So., Rocky River: Firstteam all-GLC. Two-time district qualifier, had an 81.5 18-hole average. Closed the season strongly with a 77.8average over his final four events including an 80 at the Pine Hills district.

Jacob Weegman, Sr., Wellington: Firstteam all-LC8. Averaged 43.5strokes per nine holes with a low round of 38.
