Northeast Ohio is experiencing a coronavirus test shortage like the rest of the nation, according to a news release from Lorain County Public Health.

The health department understands how frustrating this can be for people who want a COVID-19 test, the release said.

Lorain County Public Health encourages people to stay home if they are sick or if they were exposed to someone who has COVID-19.

“Staying home might not be an option for people without paid sick leave or who are essential workers,” said Health Commissioner Mark Adams. “If you can’t stay home, be sure to wear a mask around others and wash hands often.

“Employers, use the New Year to consider improvements to sick leave and caregiving policies. Paid sick leave makes it easier for people — especially people in vulnerable situations — to protect themselves and the rest of our community.”

Adams said if you think you might need a COVID-19 test, ask yourself three questions: do I feel sick?; do I live with someone who just tested positive for COVID-19?; and was I within six feet of someone who just tested positive for COVID-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more?

If you answered no to all of these questions, please do not get a COVID-19 test, Adams said.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, try to find a test or visit LorainCountyHealth.com/coronavirus for options.

People who feel sick should test right away and stay home until they feel better, if able, Adams said.

Those who were exposed to someone who just tested positive for COVID-19 should test five to seven days after the exposure, he said.

If you’re unable to find a test, do your best to stay home and follow other prevention strategies, like wearing a mask and washing hands, Adams said.
