Chun perseveres, wins Women’s PGA
In Gee Chun was an upbeat, smiling presence throughout the Women’s PGA Championship — easy enough when you shoot 64 in the first round and lead comfortably for much of the tournament.
In the final round, all of her positive thinking was put to the test.
“Golf is never easy,” the 27-year-old South Korean said.
Chun won her third major championship, playing her best in the first round on a wet day and then persevering through a steamy weekend at Congressional. On June 26, she quickly lost what was left of a oncesizeable lead, then rallied to win by one when Lexi Thompson’s putting faltered down the stretch.
Chun shot a 3-over 75 on each of the last two days of the tournament. She finished at 5-under 283, barely enough to beat out Thompson (73) and Minjee Lee (70) by a stroke.
“Before start today my coach told me, ‘In Gee, if you enjoy your game, this trophy is yours,’” Chun said.
SCHAUFFELE WINS » Xander Schauffele won the Travelers Championship with a three-stroke swing on the final hole, hitting to 3 feet for birdie after rookie Sahith Theegala took two shots to get out of a bunker and made a double bogey in the group ahead. A stroke ahead entering the day, Schauffele finished with a 2-under 68 at TPC River Highlands to beat Theegala and J.T. Poston by two strokes. The Olympic champion had a 19-under 261 total.

ACUNA JR. OUT OF BRAVES LINEUP » Ronald Acuña Jr. is not starting in the
Braves’ game against the Dodgers on June 26 after fouling a ball off his left foot the previous night. Acuña moved around the Braves clubhouse in the afternoon with his left knee on a medical scooter to keep his foot elevated. Tests showed no fracture, but the star outfielder said he couldn’t put pressure on his foot.
MARINERS, ANGELS BRAWL » The Mariners and the Angels engaged in a lengthy full-team brawl in the second inning June 26 after tensions over two days of inside pitches boiled over.
Both managers and six players were ejected after the brouhaha, which stopped and started twice before Angels closer Raisel Iglesias came back out to the empty field to throw a tub of sunflower seeds and another bucket of gum onto the infield.
Three of the first four hitters in Seattle’s lineup were ejected, while three Angels pitchers were tossed. Seattle’s Jesse Winker was hit by the first pitch of the second inning by Angels opener Andrew Wantz, who had also thrown a pitch behind the head of the Mariners’ No. 2 hitter, Julio Rodriguez, in the first inning.

JAMES CARD SELLS FOR $2.4M » Someone has paid $2.4 million for a one-of-a-kind LeBron James trading card, a purchase price that fell short of what some expected. The auction of the “Triple Logoman” card ended June 25. Officials at the collectibles marketplace Goldin, which ran the auction, suggested it could fetch the largest price ever for a card. It didn’t come close. The record remains $6.6 million spent for a Honus Wagner trading card last year.
