An Elyria family lost several pets in a July 7 house fire.

At 3:34 p.m., the Elyria Fire Department was called to a home in the 200 block of Roosevelt Avenue for a structure fire, according to a news release from Elyria fire Chief Joseph D. Pronesti.

When firefighters arrived, the crews discovered a working fire and began an offensive attack to confine and control the blaze, the release stated.

The fire was contained to the kitchen, but caused heavy heat and smoke damage to the entire residence, according to the release.

“Unfortunately, five pets perished in the fire, but firefighters did manage to save one pet,” the release stated.

The fire caused an estimated $20,000 damage to the structure and $10,000 in contents, according to the Fire Department.

“Northview animal clinic is helping with the cost and cremation of my fur babies,” said Satonya Mencke, owner of the animals.

The American Red Cross of North Central Ohio responded as well to help the family of four, according to a news release.

The Red Cross provided assistance, such as temporary lodging, food and clothing for the immediate needs (of) one adult and three children living in the home, the release stated.

“Red Cross volunteers will continue to help those affected, providing recovery assistance, resources and referrals to community partners,” the release stated.

The Red Cross encourages people to learn and implement fire safety procedures and devices in their homes to protect themselves from the tragedy of a house fire.

Red Cross Emergency app combines more than 35 emergency alerts to help keep the user safe.
