A 24-year-old Lorain man was arrested at gunpoint July 12 after leading police on a chase through a crowd in the city.

Two Lorain police officers were driving an undercover sport utility vehicle 7:17 p.m. on Brownell Avenue as part of the Lorain Police Department’s Patrol Impact Team, according to a report from Lorain police Capt. Roger Watkins.

Tremont Perry was traveling northbound on Brownell in a white Nissan Rogue at about 50 mph when the officers took note of him, the report stated.

The police activated the vehicle’s lights and attempted to stop Perry, but he led them on a chase up until he reached a crowd of adults and children gathering along the sides of the roadway for a sports event at Lakeview Park South, according to the report.

An officer noticed Perry’s hands quickly reaching across the middle of the vehicle shortly after the officer activated the emergency lights, the report stated.

Perry then increased his speed.

Some of the adults were shouting at the officers to follow Perry, but they were forced to decrease their speed to 20 mph due to the crowded area, the report stated.

“While driving past the crowd we were bombarded with the shouts of many angry parents telling us to chase after the suspect vehicle,” according to the report. “The driver of this vehicle disregarded all persons in this area and continued eastbound on West 11th Street at a high rate of speed and failing to stop for posted stop signs.”

At that point, the officers lost sight of the vehicle as it sped away down West 11th and then turned north onto Oberlin Avenue, the report stated. .

Nearby officers who were responding to the area to assist, successfully tracked Perry down and eventually stopped him near the intersection of West 18th Street and Washington Avenue, the report stated.

Officers approached Perry at gunpoint and arrested him without incident, the report stated.

Perry is facing violations of speed, driving under suspension, failure to use a turn signal and obey stop sign, willful disregard of safety on streets and failure to comply with order of police officer by means of fleeing, according to the police report.

Perry was traveling with a passenger, a 28-yearold Lorain man, who was charged with possession of marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia, according to the report.

The man was issued a summons to appear in court and released, the report stated.
