England knocks off Sweden, advances to the UEFA Final

-

England is heading back to Wembley Stadium for a European Championship final.

This time it’s the women’s team going for the title.

Sealed with an impudent back-heeled goal by Alessia Russo, England swept past Sweden with a 4-0 win on Tuesday in the first Euro 2022 semifinal match.

Germany or France awaits in Sunday’s final — they play on Wednesday — and the winner will be taking on a host team that has captured the imagination of a nation. Just like England’s men’s team did last summer at Euro 2020, when it got to the final at Wembley but lost in a penalty shootout to Italy.

“Football’s Coming Home” — English soccer’s anthem — was sung by the excitable home fans in the crowd of 28,624 at Bramall Lane in Sheffield in the final minutes of what proved to be a one-sided match as England reached the final of a European Championship for the third time, after 1984 and 2009. England lost both times and has never won a major international tournament.

NFL AMENDOLA RETIRES »

Danny Amendola, who earned two Super Bowl rings with the Patriots and became one of Tom Brady’s favorite playmakers during his five seasons in New England, is retiring.

The veteran 36-yearold receiver posted a video on social media that featured highlights of his 13 NFL seasons with only one line: “Wouldn’t have it any other way.”

The former Texas Tech standout made his NFL debut with the St. Louis Rams in 2009 as an undrafted free agent and spent his first four seasons there before being signed by the Patriots in 2013. He also had stops in Miami (2018), Detroit (2019, 2020) and Houston last season.

CHASE YOUNG STARTS

ON PUP » Chase Young is starting Washington Commanders training camp on the physically unable to perform list and is the furthest from returning among the team’s injured players.

Young, tight end Logan Thomas and centers Chase Roullier and Tyler Larsen won’t practice when camp opens Wednesday. There’s also no guarantee Young will be ready to play in the season opener Sept. 12 against Jacksonville, roughly 10 months since tearing the ACL in his right knee.

“Chase Young is probably the one that’s going to take the most time,” coach Ron Rivera said Tuesday at his annual news conference on the eve of camp. “It was serious, obviously, and any time you’re talking about an ACL it’s just down the line. We’ll have to wait and see on that one.”

Rivera does not expect offensive tackle Cornelius Lucas, placed on the non-football injury list with an illness designation, to miss much practice time. Young is another story.

MLB

STANTON TO DL » The New York Yankees placed slugger Giancarlo Stanton on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with left Achilles tendonitis.

The move was retroactive to Sunday. Stanton is batting .228 with 24 homers and 61 RBIs for the AL East-leading Yankees, who face the New York Mets in the opener of a two-game Subway Series on Tuesday night at Citi Field.

TWINS ACTIVATE SANO »

Minnesota Twins slugger Miguel Sanó has been activated from the 60-day injured list after missing nearly three months with torn meniscus in his left knee.

The Twins announced the move before starting a two-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday.

Sanó hurt his knee April 26 while celebrating the Twins’ 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers in a game that was decided on the final play. He played four days later but left the game early with knee pain and later underwent surgery.
