Historical Society ready to leap into fall with plethora of events

- By Destiny Torres

With school supplies coming back on the shelves, warm days soon will yield to cool nights and as the seasons change, the sun will go down sooner and leaves will begin to litter yards and streets.

And there will be no shortage of events at Amherst Historical Society to entertain and educate the community about the past.

Sandy Kaiser, executive director of the Historical Society, located at 113 S Lake St., said the organization has planned events all the way until Halloween.

• Village Garage Sale on Saturdays until the end of November. The event is full of antique furniture, Christmas decorations, knickknacks and a plethora of oddities.

Any and all donations of good used furniture are welcome.

This Village Garage Sale takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sandstone Village, 736 Milan Ave.

• Annual President’s Dinner takes place at 5:30 p.m., Sept. 3. The dinner honors former President Harry S. Truman and will be hosted at the Amherst Eagles Club, 116 Milan Ave. The event will include a Truman impersonator, dinner, a cash bar and a raffle.

• Murder Mystery Dinner is hosted by the Amherst Historical Society and will feature “The Death of Doctor Pepper,” which will be produced by the Sandstone Summer Theatre at 6 p.m., Oct. 8 and 9. Reservations can be made by calling 440988-7255.

• By My Lanterns Light will bring spooky local history

to life Oct. 22 with ghost stories and different historic displays at all of the historic sandstone buildings in the Amherst Sandstone Village.

With the hustle and bustle of all of these events, the Amherst Historical Society

also is searching for volunteers to help with events and take visitors on tours.

“We like to stay busy out here,” Kaiser said. “But to be busy, we desperately need volunteers to keep the Sandstone village open.”

Many people do not realize

the Amherst Sandstone Village is there as Milan Road is further out into the country than many would typically travel, she said.

“We cannot do this alone,” Kaiser said. “Please call the office and let us know if you’re interested in volunteering and help us keep these events and programs going.”

The commitment of the Amherst Historical Society is to preserve, display and exhibit its local history and sandstone heritage and to provide excellence in educational programming and historic preservation.
