Military marvel Historic WWII C-47 to offer rides Aug. 6 at airport

Celebrate the wonderful world of aviation by taking a ride in a WW II airplane, the C-47 Hairless Joe on Aug. 6 at the Huron-County Airport, located at 961 U.S. Route 20 in Norwalk, according to a news release.

The C-47 Skytrain operated from every continent in the world during WW II.

The C-47, Hairless Joe, is owned and operated by the Yankee Air Museum and was one of the most vital pieces of military equipment, according to Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, in winning the war, the release said.

The C-47 Skytrain was developed from the Douglas DC-3 civilian airliner.

One of the most massproduc­ed aircraft in history with 11,000 manufactur­ed before and during WW II, there still are 172 of the aircraft flying today.

Also known as the gooney bird, the C-47 was built to last, the release said.

For thrill seekers desiring a once-in-a-lifetime experience, public rides on the C-47 are available at 11 a.m. and noon.

The ride is a 20-minute experience and costs $225 per person, according to the release.

The Yankee Air Museum was establishe­d in 1981.

The museum is a nonprofit that dedicates itself to educating individual­s through the history of American aeronautic­s, aerospace industry and its associated while inspiring generation­s through personal experience­s to instill pride in our national accomplish­ments, according to the release.

The Yankee Air Museum, located at 47884 D St. in Belleville, Mich., is on the grounds of historic Willow Run Airport.
