A homemade rice and beans cookoff was hosted by the Kingdom Outreach Center at 4122 Elyria Avenue in Sheffield Township.

Lunch featured roast pork along with chicken and salad as well.

There was also a good selection of Puerto Rican food that included relleno de papa, pasteles and pastelillos.

“We’re doing things that aren’t traditional things churches would do for outreach,” said Mitchell Fallis, president of the board at Kingdom Outreach Center.

Luncheons are one of the many non-traditional ways that Kingdom Outreach Center gives back to the community.

Each participant that attended the event could choose a favorite rice piece to their meal just like you would at a chili cook off.

The money raised goes to help Kingdom Outreach Center to keep their operation going.

“We try to minister to those who are lost, hurting or forgotten, someone who wouldn’t walk into a church building,” Fallis said when asked about the center’s mission.

The center does something every day of the week from helping victims of addiction or those who are trying to become sober and need some assistance.

That’s not all they do, Saturdays are their primary event day along with

the gospel brunch that they do on Sundays.

On the fourth Friday of every month they do something called ‘Hip Hop Church,’ something that Lou Acosta, the founder of Kingdom Outreach Center, was part of back in the Bronx where he grew up.

According to Acosta, that idea started what Afrika Bambaataa was doing instead of being part of the Black Spades.

Acosta said that the same thing that happened to Black Spades soon happened to his gang, Ghetto Brothers and thus hip hop in its earliest form was created.

Every fourth Friday of the month, you can experience how to use hip hop messaging in a Christian sense.
