Amherst Historical Society announced Feb. 3 it will offer its first scholarship program beginning in March.

“We are pleased to announce that we have built a committee and will begin offering four $1,500 scholarships for students that help impact the community going forward,” said Sandy Kaiser, executive director of the Amherst Historical Society.

The scholarship has been a long time coming.

The committee was formed over a year ago, according to Kaiser.

“Of the four scholarships, two are for trades, one is for a high school sophomore and above, and one is for continuing education for bachelor’s, master’s and more,” said Joseph Fought, committee chair.

The scholarship money is made possible through the donations and events that the Historical Society holds throughout the year, including its popular garage/rummage sales every Saturday in the summer.

“The scholarships can be used for any college as long as it is accredited and will be paid directly to the school or company providing a wide range for students,” Fought said. “This includes those who might be taking online classes through a college as well.”

The deadline for applications for the scholarship is April 14, and the winners will be awarded May 16 during the Historical Society’s next official scholarship committee meeting.

Those interested in applying for the scholarship can do so by going to the soon-to-be-live Amhersthistoricalsociety.org/scholarshipfund or by stopping into the offices at 113 S Lake St. in Amherst.

“We will be taking into account community work for the scholarship as we are always looking to better the community,” Kaiser said.
