District continues ‘Kindland’ campaign at Westwood

The Wellington Exempted Village School District is continuing its mission to spread kindness through the “Kindland” campaign, according to a news release.

Rallies have been held at Wellington High School and McCormick Middle School over the past year, and now it’s time for the youngest Dukes to spread even more kindness, the release said.

Stick together

The Westwood Elementary School students in grades K-3, hosted a Kindland “Stick Together” rally Feb. 24 in the gymnasium, 305 Union St. in Wellington.

The rally completed the Kindland “anti-bullying” cycle of rallies that began at Wellington High and continued on to McCormick Middle schools, according to the release.

Wellington Schools Superintendent Ed Weber wanted the entire Wellington Schools district to participate in the “stick together” rallies illustrated by a demonstration using strips of Duct tape and students pledging to “stick together,” the release said.

The rally was an interactive and solicited responses from students to reflect on definitions of “kindness,” “bullying” and they were asked to imagine what, if any, changes might be need to be made to create a “kinder” environment at their school, according to the release.

The rally consisted of videos/slides and included student volunteers with microphones roaming the audience for responses.

The rally began with introductions from Westwood Elementary School Principal Janet Kubasak and McCormick Middle School Dean of Culture Nathan Morris, the release said.

Two McCormick students hosted the Westwood rally, according to the release.
