Woman dies in crash; man, 3 children injured
Jeep crashes into wall, spins into lane, hit by semi truck in poor weather conditions
A Pennsylvania woman was struck and killed by a semi-trailer after exiting a disabled vehicle on the Ohio Turnpike March 3.
Effie Carder, 26, was a passenger in a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 30-year-old Pennsylvania man, according to a news release from the Milan Highway Patrol Post.
Three juveniles, ages 4, 3 and 2, were also passengers in the Jeep. They are also from Corry, Pa.
The Jeep was traveling westbound, went off the right side of the road, struck a guardrail and became disabled in the center lane at approximately 7:32 p.m. at milepost 116.5 in Oxford Township, the release stated.
All five occupants exited the vehicle in an attempt to get off the roadway, but were struck by a 2023 Freightliner Semi tractor trailer.
Carder sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene, the release stated.
The driver and the three juveniles sustained serious injuries and were transported by LifeCare EMS to Firelands Regional Medical Center, the release stated.
The Ohio Turnpike was closed westbound for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated, the release stated.
The State Highway Patrol was assisted on-scene by the Groton Township Fire Department, LifeCare EMS, Interstate Towing, and Ohio Turnpike Maintenance.
The crash remains under investigation.
Further information wasn’t available March 4, according to an OSP dispatcher.
However, the dispatcher noted the weather conditions at the time of the crash were poor. The area experienced a significant amount of rain as well as flooding in some areas.
