A new full service medical center, complete with a pharmacy, is in the works for downtown Sandusky.

Family Health Services has purchased the historic Granary building, located at 149 E. Water St., according to a news release issued by the company’s Marketing Director Alexis Wobser.

Renovations have begun on the 6,300-square-foot building which eventually will house a brand new medical center, behavioral health office and retail pharmacy, the release stated.

The center will include a family physician, two family nurse practitioners, a psychiatrist, two licensed clinical social workers, medical support staff and a full pharmacy, according to the release.

The building will host an activity area on the rooftop overlooking Lake Erie that will allow for Family Health Services group therapy services, senior focused activities such as seated-yoga and may become available to rent for local programs in the future, the release stated.

“These community services are needed in the city and are made possible due to the collaborations that we’ve formed with local agencies,” said Family Health Services Chief Operating Officer David Tatro.

As a federally-qualified health center, the new facility will accept private insurance and all forms of Medicaid and Medicare while offering a sliding fee scale for those that qualify, the release stated.

“It will be available to not only local residents living and working in the area, but also visitors that find themselves in need of medical care but may not want to go to the hospital,” according to the release.

The building sits on a section of Sandusky Transit stops and will help to relieve transportation barriers for patients needing services, though free transportation will continue to be offered by Family Health Services, the release stated.

Family Health Services is known for offering the best in health care technology and was awarded three badges from the Health Resources and Services Administration for their commitment to provide access to quality health care, reduce health disparities and for utilizing top of the line healthcare technology, according to the release.

Family Health Services was recognized as one of the top five-percent Federally Qualified Health Centers in the nation, the release stated.

Renovations for the new medical center and pharmacy are projected to be completed late this year with a soft opening of the center to follow.

The Family Health Services first Golf Classic will kickoff Sept. 11 to help raise funds for the project, according to the release.

A portion of the proceeds will be gifted to local first responders in addition to benefiting the new medical center, the release stated.

“It’s important to remember why Family Health Services is here, and that’s for the community,” Tatro said. “This wouldn’t be possible without them.”

Sponsorships are being accepted toward the renovations of the building and local residents or foundations have the opportunity to name parts of the new facility in honor of a special community member or cause, the release stated.
