- Byron tops Larson to win at Phoenix

William Byron won his second straight NASCAR Cup Series race, taking advantage of a pair of late cautions to give the rolling Hendrick Motorsports team a victory in overtime at Phoenix Raceway on March 12.

Byron’s No. 24 Chevrolet got a great start in overtime with two laps left, and just like he did a week earlier at Las Vegas, he overtook teammate Kyle Larson for the win. He also had to hold off Ryan Blaney, who finished second, while Tyler Reddick was third.

Byron denied Kevin Harvick a chance to win his 10th race at Phoenix. Harvick’s Stewart-Haas No. 4 Ford passed Larson for the lead with 44 laps remaining, taking advantage of the long run under green-flag conditions that favored his car all afternoon.

But a yellow flag with 10 laps remaining dashed Harvick’s hopes.

Two people with knowledge of the deal say the Dolphins are acquiring All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey in a trade with the Rams. Los Angeles will get Miami’s third-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft and tight end Hunter Long for Ramsey.

A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press that the Washington Commanders have agreed to terms with defensive tackle Daron Payne on a four-year contract worth $90 million. Sixty million dollars of that will be guaranteed.

The Bills agreed to sign starting linebacker Matt Milano to a twoyear contract extension in a move that frees up $6 million in salary cap space before the NFL’s signing period opens this week. The Bills announced the signing.

A college baseball umpire has been suspended indefinitely on by the Southland Conference following his gameending called strikes in New Orleans’ 7-3 victory over Mississippi State on March 10. The conference said March 11 it did a thorough review of the calls before making its decision to suspend umpire Reggie Drummer. Drummer called a third strike on a pitch that broke low and well outside. His call came one pitch after batter Davon Mims had protested a called second strike on a breaking ball that appeared low.

Kansas coach Bill Self was discharged from a Kansas City-area hospital Sunday, and the Hall of Famer plans to rejoin the No. 3 Jayhawks as they begin defense of their NCAA championship this week. Self went to the emergency room Wednesday night complaining of chest tightness and concerns with his balance. Doctors at the University of Kansas Health System said he underwent a standard heart catheterization and had two stents placed to help treat the blocked arteries.

Zach Edey scored 30 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and No. 5 Purdue hung on to beat Penn State, 67-65 in the Big Ten Tournament championship game.

Brandon Miller scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as fourth-ranked Alabama smothered No. 18 Texas A&M 82-63 for its second Southeastern Conference Tournament championship in three seasons.
