Lorain County Community College’s men’s basketball team once again took home the Region 12 championship title for the 2023 season.

According to head coach Marty Eggleston, the team had a hard fought victory against other Division 2 teams this year including Hocking, Owens and Tri-C.

“What a lot of people don’t realize is, that we are a Division 3 team going up against Division 2 teams, so it is definitely a difficult conference,” Eggleston said.

The team was honored March 16 at the LCCC Board of Trustees meeting.

The men’s college basketball team is one of eight varsity sports offered at the college.

While basketball is one of the big winners for LCCC each year, the volleyball team also has managed to make it to the national finals a few times in the past.

“We are a part of the OCCAC, Ohio Community College Athletic Conference, and almost all of the teams in our conference are Division 2, which means all can give scholarships for the work,” Eggleston said.

The Commodores previously were regional champs in 2022 and in 2017.

This year, the team members had the opportunity to cut down their own net in celebration for the win.

“We play a tough conference and tough schedule, and our student athletes put a ton of time and energy and effort into the court,” Eggleston said. “They are very proud of their accomplishments and are happy to be able to have these plaques to celebrate their champion status.”

The Lorain County Community College men’s basketball team fell to the College of DuPage Chaparrals earlier this month in the NJCAA Great Lakes District Championship in Glen Ellyn, Ill., 84-70.
