Beyond the eight area state qualifiers coming from the Division I District Wrestling tournament in Perrysburg March 2, six more area boys wrestlers punched their tickets as well.

Avon — the lone area Division

I school at Hoover — qualified senior Adam Schumacher (175), who is making his first trip to Columbus. Schumacher earned two victories by decision on the first day before getting pinned by No. 8 ranked wrestler, freshman Caige Horak of Massillon Perry (rankings by Intermat/MatScout’s Josh Lowe) in the second period.

Dropping to the consolation semifinal, Schumacher managed to punch his ticket to state with a 1-0 decision over Walsh Jesuit’s Trevor Dick. The Avon senior took fourth after coming out on the losing end of an 11-7 decision against No. 7 Gino Perrine of Nordonia.

In Division II, only one area wrestler qualified for the state tournament after

Bay’s returning state placer Anthony Rocco (120) had to settle for an alternate spot. It was Vermilion Sophomore Aiden Kyser (144) out of the Norwalk District as the third place finisher, reaching the championship semifinals before getting through in the consolation bracket.

In Division III, returning state champ Tristin

Greene from Keystone (projected state champ at 157) and teammate Jordan Folmer (215) both qualified for Columbus from the Independence District. Greene took home a district title, while Folmer took third place over Dalton’s Kaden Russell.

One other duo broke through from Independence, as Columbia’s Michael

Frye (No. 10 at 106 pounds) lost for the second straight weekend in a finals match to No. 1 Derion Williams (Trinity) by 3-1 sudden victory. The sophomore Frye will not go alone on his first trip to Columbus, as senior Rushi Patel (113) won his consolation semifinal to book a ticket to Columbus as well with a No. 4 seed.
