Library starts composting program
In honor of National Earth Month, Westlake Porter Public Library, 27333 Center Ridge Road, and Rust Belt Riders announced a new partnership aimed at providing Westlake residents with convenient food scrap composting options, according to a news release.
Composting bins in which residents can deposit food scraps have been installed in the parking lot south of the library adjacent to Drive-Up Services, the release said.
Organic material collected by Rust Belt Riders serves as the base for soil blends they produce, which in turn nourishes food grown within the region, according to the release.
Drop-off membership is required to use the bins, which are locked, according to the release.
All members receive a four-digit code to unlock the bins, and can use the bins 24 hours a day, seven days a week, regardless of library hours, the release said.

Rust Belt Riders is a worker-owned cooperative dedicated to the health of the environment and its employees, according to the release.
The organization has been active in Ohio since 2014, the release said.
“Rust Belt Riders is a great organization that we are happy to partner with and host a service that many have been asking for,” said Library Director Andrew Mangels in the release. “It is also a great way to start April and kick off National Earth Month.”
