Lake Erie College adding three majors

- Staff report editor@news-herald.com

Lake Erie College recently announced it is adding three new majors to provide students with expertise in high-growth areas in which employers are searching for talent.

The new offerings are Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, and Nutrition.

The majors have been added through the college’s partnership with Rize Education, a higher education company that uses a course-sharing model to help expand opportunities by creating shared majors and adopting high-demand programs, according to a news release.

“We are thrilled to offer these majors to Lake Erie students through this partnership,” Jennifer Kinnaird, the college’s provost and vice president of academic affairs, stated in the release “Each of these job-focused majors is taught by qualified professionals and academic experts who understand what industry hiring managers are looking for.

“These programs directly address the needs of Ohio employers and we are looking forward to the internship and career opportunities they unlock for Lake Erie students.”

Each of the college’s new programs addresses critical employment needs in Ohio and beyond, the college stated in the release.

The 0% unemployment rate for Cybersecurity graduates reflects the ever-increasing role they have across the globe — roles which increasingly go beyond coding into management, structures, analysis and more. Lake Erie College’s new Cybersecurity program will seek to equip students with the technical and business knowledge needed to secure the high-paying jobs in this field, all without needing to be advanced programmers.

With the field of Data Analytics now underpinning every industry on the globe, and a reported 97% of businesses investing in improving their data systems, Lake Erie students pursuing a degree in Data Analytics will be learning job-focused skills needed to succeed in this growing industry, according to the release.

Lake Erie students pursuing a major in Nutrition can expect to learn how to solve global health challenges and seek employment in wellness careers. As dietary diseases like diabetes and obesity surge, the demand for dietary experts is skyrocketing and job ads for nutritionists have doubled in the last five years.

These new programs are available starting this fall through a partnership with the Lower Cost Models Consortium and Rize Education. The consortium is a strategic partnership of private colleges and universities across the country collaborating with Rize Education to provide access to a cutting-edge curriculum that prepares students for successful careers.
