Village asking residents to help pick new seal design
The village of South Amherst is redesigning its seal and is asking for the help of South Amherst residents to pick one.
Currently, there are nine different designs and community members can go to Town Hall, 103 W. Main St., to vote for the one they like the best.
South Amherst Mayor Scott Jones, who has previous experience working in graphic design, designed each seal.
“I volunteered to do that and I asked if anybody else wanted to take over, and there was little to no response,” Jones said. “But, a lot people said they liked the idea because it’s bringing in community involvement.”
Jones said he aims to open the voting to the village’s website as well at https://villageofsouthamherst.com/.
“We are going to roll out online voting for the last couple weeks of the voting to see if we can get some more votes,” he said. “By the end of April, we’re going to roll out the new seal.
“Hopefully, people like it and we can start using one of them on our vehicles, letterhead and give the town an identity.”
Jones said working on projects like these can help South Amherst become more identifiable to the public.
“You mention South Amherst and people say, ‘Amherst? You’re the mayor of Amherst?’ ” he said. “And I say, ‘no, it’s South Amherst.’ “
The seal redesign continues aesthetic efforts headed by Jones since he took the role of mayor at the start of 2024.
The interior of the Town Hall office recently was renovated, for the first time since the 1990s, according to Jones.
“We made a lot of nice new renovations for the folks at Town Hall, and they deserve it more than anyone, seeing that they are the backbone of what we do,” he said. “It’s bringing them together and they appreciate it.”
Jones said the rooms in the building received new paint and some of the offices were redesigned.
He said the unit that previously was the Mayor’s Office now is used by two other village employees.
“I have a standing only desk and that’s all I need,” Jones said. “Give me a little bit of a room, and I’m good.”
