Shooting range incident confirmed suicide
The death of a man following an incident at a Mentor shooting range was ruled a suicide, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
The 76-year-old Mentor man died July 15 of a gunshot wound to the chest after shooting himself at Point Blank Range & Gun Shop, 5957 Heisley Road, the Coroner’s Office said.
The police investigation completed late last week concluded that no laws were violated in the incident. Police continue to investigate whether all conditions of the city’s permit to Point Blank were met.
“Capt. (Andrew) Lehner and I will review it and forward our recommendations to the city manager,” Police Chief Kevin Knight said. “He has the final say on it as the safety director.”
The police and fire departments responded at about 3 p.m. to the facility for a male with a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township, where he died.
The club’s policy prohibits gun rentals to anyone who comes in alone, is unarmed and has never shot at the range before.
The facility opened in 2014.
