Relay for Life events in Geauga, Lake counties to merge

- Staff report

The Relay For Life season is gearing up and the American Cancer Society announced some changes for Geauga and Lake counties.

According to a news release issued recently, the American Cancer Society and its volunteers have decided to merge a few events. The three Relay For Life events in Lake County — Eastern, Western and Central — will now be the Relay For Life of Lake County and will take place June 3 at Memorial Middle School in Mentor.

In addition, the Relay For Life events of Chardon and Burton/Middlefield are merging to be the Relay For Life of Geauga County and will be held May 13 at Century Village in Burton.

The Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer, according to the press release. During Relay For Life events, members of each team take turns walking or running around the track or path after having participated in fundraising in the months leading up to the event.

“Our volunteers are simply awesome and have so much passion for what we do at Relay,” Jeff May, volunteer event lead for Lake County, stated in the press release. “Bringing them together has created even more energy and I think that now that we are together, as one, we can continue to build on that momentum and grow this event year over year going forward.”

Funds raised help the American Cancer Society provide free information and support for people facing the disease today, and fund cancer research aimed at helping protect future generations.
