- Staff report

A kayaker who went missing after his kayak capsized in the Grand River was found alive a few hours later.

A kayaker who went missing after his kayak capsized in the Grand River March 21 was found alive a few hours later.

According to the Madison Fire District:

At 7:31 p.m., the fire district was dispatched for a lost kayaker at Hidden Valley Park, 4872 Klasen Road.

The Madison Fire District responded to the scene, along with the Perry Fire District, Painesville Fire Department, Fairport Harbor Fire Department and Madison Township police, to find three kayakers out of the water at the park.

The three said their friend capsized and they were unable to find him. The three had rescued themselves and the fourth also eventually rescued himself after wandering through the woods and finding a house for assistance. He contacted a family member, who picked him up from the location.

Because of the climate and amount of time that had elapsed, concerns of exposure required additional assistance, which was provided by Lake Metroparks, Metro LifeFlight and the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Contact was made with the individual at 10:09 p.m., and he said he was being transported by family to University Hospitals Geneva Medical Center for possible exposure-related issues.
