Day withdraws because mom ill

Defending champion Jason Day tearfully withdrew from the Dell Technologi­es Match Play after six holes Wednesday so he could be with his mother when she has surgery for lung cancer. Day said his mother, Dening, was diagnosed in Australia at the start of the year and told she had 12 months to live. He brought her to Ohio in the last month for more tests, hopeful that surgery would lead to a chance for a recovery. “It’s really hard to even comprehend being on the golf course right now because of what she’s gone through,” Day said.

LOPEZ, IBAKA SUSPENDED» Chicago’s Robin Lopez and Toronto’s Serge Ibaka have both been suspended one game without pay by the NBA for fighting. Lopez and Ibaka threw punches at one another during the Bulls-Raptors game on Tuesday. Raptors assistant coach Jamaal Magloire was fined $15,000 for his role in the altercatio­n.

BARTY ADVANCES» Ashleigh Barty stretched her winning streak to eight matches by handing former top-5 player Eugenie Bouchard a fourth consecutiv­e loss, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in the first round of the Miami Open on Wednesday. Barty claimed the last three games of the match between two past junior Wimbledon champions whose careers have both been filled with ups and downs.

JERSEY FACES INSPECTION» Authoritie­s will try to verify that the jersey they recently recoverd is Tom Brady’s Super Bowl jersey. Experts in the sports memorabili­a industry, including one that has worked directly with NFL teams, say it is a tedious process that involves comparing photos and videos that captured degradatio­n to the jersey during the game. They also compare the jersey to teamissued serial numbers.

JONES NO LONGER CHARGED WITH FELONY» Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones faces three misdemeano­r charges, including assault, but no longer is being charged with a felony for a January confrontat­ion with hotel security guards, police and a nurse. A felony charge of harassment with a bodily substance, for allegedly spitting at a nurse, was dismissed at the prosecutin­g attorney’s request, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said Wednesday. The misdemeano­rs include disorderly conduct.

MAY HAS SURGERY» Minnesota Twins righthande­r Trevor May has undergone Tommy John elbow surgery that will keep him off the mound this season. The Twins announced on Wednesday that the surgery was successful.
