Chisenhall will start season on 10-day DL

GOODYEAR, ARIZ. » Indians outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall will start the season on the 10-day disabled list.

Chisenhall ran into a wall on March 24 against the Cubs in Mesa.

He has been getting treatment since. The Indians starting right fielder was hitting 268 with two home runs and six RBI in 15 games before he was hurt.

The American League champions will also be without Jason Kipnis to start the season.

Manager Terry Francona said outfielder Abraham Almonte, who was suspended for use of a banned substance last spring, would open the season with the big league team.

Almonte, a switch hitter, is hitting .383 with three home runs and 12 RBI in 18 games. He joins Austin Jackson, who has recovered from a knee injury, as Cleveland’s extra outfielders.

Tyler Naquin and Brandon Guyer will be the likely starters when the Indians open the season on the road against the Texas Rangers as the center fielder and right fielder.

Chisenhall will make the trip to Texas with the team. The team has not made a decision on Michael Brantley, who is returning from shoulder surgery.

“I’ll admit, it’s been a little stressful for us. There’s an unknown there.” — Indians manager Terry Francona, on deciding who will start at third base

The Reds and Indians hit a combined seven home runs on March 29 as the Tribe won the last game of the spring in Goodyear, 9-6.

Michael Brantley and Yandy Diaz each contributed home runs or the Tribe. Brantley played in his second straight game in his bid to make the opening day roster after shoulder surgery.

Tribe starter Carlos Carrasco gave up four runs on nine hits in four innings, while striking out five and walking one. Three of the runs came in the first, when Adam Duvall hit a long solo shot and Jose Peraza added a tworun blast.

Diaz, No. 10 on the Tribe’s Top 30 prospects list per MLBPipeline.com, is trying to win the vacant third-base job. Jose Ramirez has moved to play second base as Kipnis is out with a sore shoulder.

“I’ll admit, it’s been a little stressful for us,” said Indians manager Terry Francona told MLB.com, referring to the thirdbase decision. “There’s an unknown there. (Diaz) hasn’t been to the major league level. He’s kind of a work in progress defensively and, it figures, nobody’s hit a ball to him in three days. But he is some kind of hitter, and whether he makes our club or not, that’s not going to deter our view of him. This kid’s got a chance to be a really good hitter and a really good player.”

The Indians have scored the most exhibition runs (212) in MLB and are now averaging 6.23 runs per game this spring.
