‘Shedding Light’ art show to make appearance
Holden Arboretum to host traveling forest-work art exhibit, with a reception planned.
The Holden Arboretum in Kirtland is hosting a reception April 4 to introduce a traveling art exhibit highlighting the interdependent relationship people have with forests.
Called “Shedding light on the working forest,” the installment features paintings and drawings from painter Kathleen Kolb, along with select verses by poet Verandah Porche, a media release from the arboretum states.
The duo’s show, which will remain at the arboretum April 4 through June 5, seeks to illuminate what the artists say is an often-overlooked population — people who make their living in the forest.
“Despite public concern about climate change and sustainability, many people are unaware of what actual work goes on in the forest around them. Vital ecosystem services provided by the forest are often poorly understood,” the release reads. “Shedding Light portrays the unseen work of loggers, foresters, mill operators, artisans and others through the eyes of a skilled artist.”
The show’s constituent works by Kolb span 20 years and, along with Porche’s verses, allow a rare glimpse into the work and lives of those whose trades live in the woods.
“Those portrayed describe and reflect on their experience, serving as ambassadors to the public. Though the public relies on the working forest, skilled labor is rarely portrayed or deeply valued,” the arboretum’s statement reads. “The voices of the loggers, sawyers, and others who work in the forest are often absent from conversations about interdependence and care of the planet. The project provides diverse opportunities for the public to consider their own relationship to the forest.”
The opening reception and accompanying program takes place April 4 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Corning Visitor’s Center at the Holden Arboretum. Although the event is free and open to the public, organizers ask those interested in attending to preregister by calling 440-9464400.
