Annual egg hunt kicks off easter

For 15 years, Karen and Dan Whiting have held an annual Easter egg hunt at Sunrise Farm, their Burton Township gourmet food and gift shop business.

“We always do it on Palm Sunday weekend,” said Karen. “The majority of our customers are families. We just want to make kids happy. When my kids were younger, they loved Easter egg hunts.”

Easter Eggstravaganza was held once again on April 8.

Each year, the event attracts anywhere from 60 to 300 children 10 and under.

Although the owners of the farm were hoping to hold the event outside, this year’s muddy weather made it necessary to move activities inside the glasshouse. The throngs of children in attendance did not seem to

mind the last-minute venue switch.

Before the families arrived, Sunrise Farm employees worked to hide hundreds of plastic eggs filled with candy under straw.

“When my grandpa was a little boy — he was one of 13 children — they did not have a lot of money,” said Karen. “So his parents would put straw in the house and hide things at holidays like coins and apples. The straw represents trying to keep Christ in Easter.”

The Whitings’ daughter, Katy Brent of Burton Township, attended the activities with her husband, Tony, and their two daughters, 3-year-old Elizabeth and 20-month-old Lois.

“The girls love seeing grammy and grampy of course, and doing activities with other kids,” said Brent.
