Fight budget cuts that will hurt cities
As Painesville City Council president, I know firsthand the benefits and high return on investment that come from many of the federal programs slated for cuts or elimination in President Trump’s budget proposal.
These programs help cities thrive as the nation’s economic engines and centers of opportunity.
Eliminating these programs will not balance the budget, but will derail local economies nationwide.
Over the past two years, the city of Painesville received Community Development Block Grant funding through the Lake County commissioners. These grants have made a significant difference in our community.
One specific project included the CDBG Storefront Improvement Program along Main and State streets. As a result of the program, we received $3 of new investment for every $1 in grant funding provided. Business owners embraced the program and invested about $120,000 of their monies back into their businesses.
In addition, in order to replace as many roofs as possible through the Painesville CDBG Roofing Program, the city partnered with World Changers and a local roofing contractor to replace nine residential roofs/gutters for less than $42,000.
These two programs funded through CDBGs helped small businesses succeed by improving business opportunities in Historic Downtown Painesville and ensuring our housing stock is maintained in good condition.
The fight to save vital domestic programs like the CDBG and HOME Partnership programs is a fight that all city leaders and residents need to join. That’s why I’m calling on Congress to be a champion for cities and develop a budget focused on building prosperity, expanding opportunity and investing in America’s cities.
I encourage fellow citizens, city leaders and residents to join me in urging Congress to stand with cities during this budget season. Visit nlc.org/ FightTheCuts to find out how you can help. Paul W. Hach Painesville City Council president
